THE CORONATION BALL The Coronation Ball, our spring formal, was one of the biggest dances of the year. The dancing was to the music of Jack Evans band which was enjoyed by everyone. As you entered the gym there was a table where red and blue paper crowns were supplied to every couple. This started the evening off on a happy lilt. All the people attending were beautifully dressed, the girls in long formals or short dresses and the boys looking unusually nice in suits. As the evening progressed the tension mounted at the thought of who would be chosen as Queen of the Ball. Finally the moment arrived when the music stopped. There were seven finalists picked by the judges and these were : JOAN HARTFREE, DAWN PARKER, WENDY CROCKER, JOANNE DAVIS, BEVERLY WINKIE, LAURIE CLEMENTS and CAROL WELSH. After this came the finals and the judges debated among themselves for a little while as to who the Queen should be. All the girls looked beautiful and it was a very hard decision. Finally they had decided, and as the crowd and finalists both waited in anticipation and excitement, Bob Meadows announced the winner - JOANNE DAVIS. Yes ! Joanne had won and she made a beautiful Queen. She was congratulated and when the noise subsided, it was announced that JOAN HARTFREE and DAWN PARKER had come in second, as Joanne's ladies-in-waiting. Again there were cheers. Then Joanne, smiling happily, walked - or floated, down the aisle to the throne where she was crowned. She received a bouquet of flowers and a gift. Joan and Dawn also received a bouquet of flowers. Then the three had their picture taken. As Joanne stood there looking proud and happy, everyone could see why she had been chosen Queen. She smiled and her glance wandered over to Walt Lewis, Personally, I could detect tears of joy in her eyes. Joanne and Walt led the procession, followed by Dawn Parker and Bob Meadows, Joan Hartfree and Dave Carter, where they formed an arch and each couple went through in turn and formed an arch. When Joanne came through the last arch, the music started and in silence the crowd watched Joanne and Walt start the dance and the rest closed in with them. It is not every day that a girl is crowned Queen and I imagine it will always be a happy and proud moment of Joanne's life, MISS QUEEN of the BALL '53. This will be the last edition of your Blue and White until June 2, when we will bring you a big Coronation Issue. The Editor. OVER THE POP BOTTLES

By WARREN CLAXTOW and DOUG. TREVOR-WILSON The bustle around the girl's gym this week was due to the choosing of next year's cheerleaders, A great many girls tried out. and the following made the Semi-Finals - Anne McGrath, Joan Carnegie, Barb, Williams. Jackie Eaton, Marianne Plaxton, Letty Chisholm, Audrey Shute, Sally Edgar, Carol Weale, Pat Wood, Beverly Patterson, Judy Jowsey, Florence Young and Donna Cruickshank, From this group of girls, six were chosen on Wednesday by the Boys' and Girls' Leaders Corps. The girls were picked on a basis of personality, pep, enthusiasm, and ability. Although the competition was very stiff, these girls came out on top - Marianne Plaxton, Jackie Eaton, Sally Edgar, Audrey Shute, Letty Chisholm, and Anne McGrath HOW THE GIRLS FEEL ABOUT BEING SELECTED AUDREY SHUTE - "Thanks an awful lot for choosing me. I'll do my best next year to uphold the school spirit. Distraught mother to group of wild children at birthday party: "There will be a special prize for the one who gets home the first". KISS AN' TELL - By Chester Field Well, you remember last week I promised to introduce to you a third partner. However, Dave N. Port has kindly simplified my problem by takking seriously ill (he died) thus eliminating the necessity for a third partner. Hoorah, Now for a letter. Dear Chester: Tell me, what have you got against "girls". I recall several letters where you have made some pretty sarcastic remarks to girls. One in particular wanted to know how to "catch" a man, I won't use the word "catch" but what can a girl who does fairly well in school, sports, and has a nice personality but isn't pretty, do. It seems the majority of the boys in Earl Haig think only of pretty faces whereas at the school I formerly attended they knew beauty is only "skin deep". What do you think ? A Girl of Earl Haig. Dear G. of E.H.: In my experience with this paper I have received many queer letters. However, none can compare with this one. Before I attack it I want to tabulate the charges made. (1) Chester has something against girls. Well let's deal with the first charge. I assure you I have nothing against girls in general. Its ones who vrite letters like this that make me sarcastic. However, don't feel that I'm angry, on the contrary, I'm greatly pleased. (I didn't think anyone ever read this column). Your suggestion that certain kinds of girls have to "catch" a man registers agreeably with me and if you remember I said on the occasion referred to, that it was this fact that frightened me. Wow "the boys of Earl Haig think only of pretty faces", I would further this statement by saying that they also think of nice legs, exquisite figures and co-operativeness. Finally, your virtuous statement "beauty is only skin deep". To be serious in this final paragraph, I would like to say that a boy, no matter whether he goes to Earl Haig or Trinity College, wants to date girls who are a lot of fun and appreciate him. If good looks are thrown in all the better, but the majority don't consider them imperative, they realize that "beauty is only skin deep". -6- In Loving Memory of Joseph Kane - Coach 1st class
son of Mr. & Mrs. Kane brother of Raise, uncle of Sugar who departed from the hallowed halls of E.H.C.I. in June, 1953 Oh! somewhere in this joyous land the sun is shining bright,
Please forgive the preceding gem from the heavens as I got carried away. Yes kiddies that great and noble Mr. Kane, defender of the masses, friend to those who have no friends and protector of the people is departing. He has turned over a new leaf. Instead of trying to keep himself out of jail, he is going to learn how to put others in. His career at Earl Haig was short and sweet He piloted the great, industrious, warriors, Kane's Krushers to victory, (we will now have a two minute silence for Neil Desborough and. the East York juniors of '53)° From that first day when he said that he didn't like long practices because we might get sunstroke, we knew that we were through. Then came the conditioning - who are you trying to kid, These were juniors, not seniors. There were many obstacles to overcome. Problems such as how many birthday parties per year should Jarvie be allowed. What is T.W. going to use for eyes ? Which locker did those guys hide my Austin in now ? And then it happened. Fight on ! fight on ! you gallant band, Oops ! Sorry I got emotional again. This is his farewell speech made from his lofty perch atop the space heater in Portable #1. continued next page -#* * * * * *
Mr. Toye: What animal becomes the most attached to a human being ? "A QUITTER NEVER WINS, A WINNER NEVER QUITS" I leave but eight words with you. I hope you remember them for they are the secret behind all success. Maybe people have phrased them differently, put it in fancy clothes, but it remains the same, effort can make a beggar a King. Your ambitions blended with ability and hard work will see you through to your goal, In many ways I regret leaving the Haig. The students have been wonderful, both in and out of the class. I shall always treasure the friendships I have made among the student body and I hope that they shall continue for years to come. Phantom Stroller
At the "Corny" ball were seen various surprise couples - among them Dawn Parker & Bob Meadows, Carolyn Nicol and Bill Richardson. All the goils looked wonderful, Horrors - reports are given out, obvious comments heard in hall "If only I'd studied" - "Wo more T,V. for me" - "I'm scared to go home" - "Quite proud of it" --- and so on - If you'll permit me a bit of philosophizing the time for worrying and cares is BEFORE not after. Congratulations to Barbara Fletcher 113 for the highest mark in grade 12 Greek, it was a tough fight - especially since there are 2 in the class. Jane Connachies' party - I hear was a success - But where was Jane from 11-11:30 and what was Heather doing with all the silverware. If anyone is interested ask either Ron Thornton or Bob Sinclair what Santa Claus does during the summer. Can anyone suggest a good German name for Nora Scott's dashound puppy. The E.H. band was a success in St. Catherines. Notes from trip - Miss Vanderlip looked very smart (overheard one St. Catherines teacher say so) - - Lynne Water's relatives were slightly crowded with 8 girls staying with them. 'Bill' Jache was worried, about the billeting but everything was all right. Several nice comments were made concerning the band's conduct, uniforms and manners. It was an honour to go to St. Catherines and our band has been a credit from start to finish. Overheard in English class - "Mr.Gummow, I forgot to do my memory work, but I have another poem - The spring is here, the grass has riz No comment from Mr. Gummow, MUSICAL WEEK-END ![]() Mr. cringan with Pogo-Cello Instead of our regular article this week we are featuring a story about the band's week-end trip. After several excursions around the Welland, Lincoln County districts, which was completely by accident, we finally arrived at Linwell High School in Thorold. There we were introduced to our hosts who treated us royally. That nightwe played at St. Catherines High School. Several hours of practising on Saturday morning was followed by a journey to Niagara Falls. At night there was a concert, which was broadcast over CKTB, consisting of mass bands, under the direction of Professor Roswear and orchestras and choirs under the direction of Dr. Johnston. They were honoured with a solo by Mr. Cringan on his pogo-cello (Latin translation, heavenly mud) dedicated to Willowdale. Sir Ernest MacMillan led the mass band and gave us a talk on getting to know the great composers of music. A party was held at the high school which was enjoyed by all. At 12:30 we left, journeying again to the Welland Canal which,as you know, is the wrong way home. It was noted by many of the girls how mannerly the Thorold boys were. (Earl Haig boys take note). |
